PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (WPVI) — Fire officials are investigating a house fire that left two people dead in Pennsauken, Camden County.
“Honestly it was scary, like, I was so scared,” said Victoria Christerer, a neighbor.
Viewer video shows the intense flames shooting out of this home in Pennsauken New Jersey.
“All the windows were on fire, and then I just remember I saw all the just the fire sparking more,” said Angelica Mercado, a neighbor.
Neighbors say they had finished watching fireworks on July 4th when they noticed the house on fire.
“There was smoke in the air from the fireworks, so by the time we went inside you still had the aroma, and then I went inside and it got stronger and that’s what made me come to the door and then I looked and see the flames above the tree,” said Samuel Shorter, a neighbor.
Residents on the 1600 block of 48th Street said they were shocked as they watched the flames engulf the home.
“My heart like dropped to the floor, cause I never saw something like this up close, and it was just so surprising because everything was okay and then the next second everything was on fire,” said Sophia Mercado, a neighbor.
Fire officials say the fire broke out around 11:30 p.m.
“It was a very long sad night,” said Samuel Shorter, a neighbor.
After the fire was out, a man and woman were discovered dead on the second floor.
“It’s just sad that two young people lost their lives, it’s tragic,” said Samuel Shorter, a neighbor.
Neighbors say the two had recently moved to the neighborhood.
“They were young, I believe in their twenties,” said neighbor Marisel Negron, adding, “It’s a sad tragic loss, that they’ve lived here for only a month and you just don’t know what tomorrow is and what tomorrow holds you know and it’s sad.”
Neighbors say they knew the man who lived on the first floor. He was able to get out.
“The guy that lives downstairs is a member of our church, said Negron, adding, “He didn’t know what happened, he really didn’t know what happened. He was I guess as shocked and surprised as everyone else.”
Residents say this is a tight knit community and are upset about the tragedy.
“It was a big loss, for the block and we were all shocked,” said Negron.
Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire. They are not releasing the names of the man and woman who died at this time.
