Bella Hadid has unlocked a new level of self-love.

The model detailed how her brief role in Ryan Murphy’s FX series The Beauty encouraged her to confront her layered relationship with beauty standards.

“The entire set taught me how to release control and the obsession with perfectionism,” Bella told Vogue in an interview published March 12. “My comfort zone is when I’m in control, but I knew I had to get out of my comfort zone, let loose, and let go.”

Indeed, the 29-year-old cut that restraint to deliver her performance in the show’s first episode. Her character Ruby took the titular cosmetic drug before she was set to walk in a fashion show. However, the injection made her skin break out in painful blisters and, after a bloody fight scene, she blew up from its side effects.

Considering her character—as well as costars Evan Peters, Ashton Kutcher, Jeremy Pope and more—went through a brutal transformation in the series, Bella felt relieved she didn’t have to sell a certain image.
