OAKLAND, Calif. — Thousands gathered outside Oakland City Hall to celebrate the hometown hero Alysa Liu after she won not one but two gold medals for figure skating at the 2026 Olympics.
Liu is ushering in a new era of figure skating as the first American woman to win Olympic gold in figure skating since 2002.

The city says Liu’s talent championed Oakland on the worldwide stage.
“Alysa Liu, she represented The Town!” City Councilmember Ken Houston said. “When she skated, she showed style, she showed finesse, she showed Oakland style. And when she bit the coin, she let ’em know that Oakland is in the house. So we are so proud of her.”
Since arriving back from the Olympics, a billboard congratulating her has popped up and she’s been spotted all around the Bay Area.
