VINELAND, N.J. (WPVI) — Some residents in Vineland, New Jersey, say a persistent humming noise they believe is coming from a nearby data center under construction is disrupting their daily lives.
Neighbors in the area say the noise is coming from the facility on South Lincoln Avenue. Scott Montgomery, who lives about a half mile from the site, said the sound is often worse at night.
“It’s just been very annoying. It’s unsettling because you can hear it right now, and if you want to sit out here and relax, you have this constant buzzing. It’s not construction,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery posted a video of the noise on social media. In the recording, a humming sound can be heard.
“We’re afraid it’s even going to get worse, so it’s just maddening to listen to this all the time. It’s hard to fall asleep at night,” he said.
Other neighbors, including Theresa Lewis, also reported concerns and contacted the Cumberland County Health Department.
“You know you got this anxiety, or I do, about the noise and just the frustration,” Lewis said.
In a statement, the Cumberland County Health Department said it has responded to complaints and visited the area to measure sound levels.
“We have responded to many concerns and have made several visits to the area in question to measure sound levels. While complainants have shared where they believe the noise is coming from, our staff are working to confirm the exact source of the noise,” the department said.
The 2.4 million-square-foot data center is being built on South Lincoln Avenue and is owned by the company Data One.
In a statement, the company said the facility is complying with local regulations.
“Our site is operating in full compliance with Vineland City noise ordinance limits,” the company said. “We will continue deploying sound reduction measures to minimize any impact on our neighbors.”
Montgomery said residents hope their concerns will lead to a resolution.
“If we have to live with this, which is not good, we’d like a monetary restitution somehow,” he said.
City officials said they have no comment at this time.
