PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Jesuit priest and New York Times bestselling author Father James Martin is out with a new book, and it’s a love letter to Philadelphia and our entire region.

“I think the lesson is that God is at work in everybody’s life. If you’re a 15-year-old busboy, dishwasher working in Conshohocken during the summer, or a Catholic priest, or a mother, or a teacher, or an attorney, or anybody. And so, it’s really the story of how God kind of led me. But, you know, it’s told, as I said, through the lens of some kind of crazy summer jobs that I held when I was a teenager and a young adult…Channel 6 is mentioned prominently in the book several times. I grew up on Channel 6 in ABC News,” said Martin.

The book, titled “Work in Progress”, is about growing up in Plymouth Meeting, trying to find work during his teenage years, while also, in a surprising turn to even himself, finding God.
Father Martin is known worldwide for his ministry with LGBTQ Catholics working to bring acceptance to the church.
Last year he took his message about Queer parishioners to The Vatican, when he met with Pope Leo XIV.
Father Martin hopes the book will help people understand that God is always there, you just need to pay attention.

“Where is God present to you? In friends, in families, in work, in nature, in art, in music, right? And just going out with a friend, or just, you know, seeing the sunshine, you know, after a long couple of days. How is God reaching out to you, and paying attention, and noticing, and taking it seriously that the good things that happen to you may be ways that God has of communicating with you and giving you a sense of peace, calm and hope.” Martin told Action News.
