PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police are searching for suspects after two café burglaries in Northern Liberties.

It is not yet known whether the crimes are connected, but surveillance cameras captured the suspects.

One of the burglaries happened at Joy Cafe, a neighborhood restaurant known for its plant-based dishes and a side of kindness. Owner Alice Leung said the suspect stole thousands of dollars on Jan. 30 during the busy lunch rush.

“He was friendly and I’m friendly, and I feel a little bit burned,” Leung said.

Leung said a young, well-dressed man came inside to escape the cold and asked to use the bathroom.

“I was busy making lunch orders for everybody else, and then he came back out and was like I’m going to order next time. Your menu is really good. I’m going to opt out this time and was like thanks for letting me use the bathroom,” Leung said.

Instead of heading to the restroom, the man went to the basement office, where Leung later discovered her rent money, wallet and phones were missing. Police say her credit cards were used at an AutoZone.

“I was just in shock. I was like why is it so messy. I was just here a half hour ago, it was fine. I really thought it was a wild animal that came through,” she said.

Neighbors expressed frustration after learning about the theft. “It’s immensely disappointing and surprising, like the boldness of someone coming in and doing that, so I hope they catch the perpetrator,” said Yvonne Bouligny of Northern Liberties.

Just a few blocks away, Cafe La Maude was burglarized overnight on Monday. The owners shared surveillance video showing a suspect breaking in through the back door and stealing $300 from the register.

“It’s just sad to know my neighbor also got hit,” Leung said.

Leung said she hopes the incidents raise awareness among other business owners. “I just feel like this is such a safe community, and I’ve been a part of for so long, so I’m not going to live in fear, so to speak, but I’ll be more mindful and a little bit more vigilant,” she said.

She also offered a message for the suspects.

“Just get a job. If you’re that motivated to go out on the coldest day of the year, you can get a job and be a productive member of society. Everybody else works really hard for what they have, so it’s not fair.”

Police said they are actively investigating.
