PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police are investigating a fatal crash that resulted in an impact so powerful that the engine flew out of an SUV.

It happened around 1 a.m. on Friday along the 9300 block of Frankford Avenue near Pearson Avenue in the city’s Torresdale section.

Officers found the male driver in the back seat after his Kia SUV went airborne, landed on top of another car, and struck a utility pole.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The entire front end of the SUV was smashed in and the engine was lying in the middle of the road.

A tow truck crew carefully removed the mangled vehicle from where it was lodged and carried away pieces of the bumper and car parts that were sprawled across the street.

Crash investigators are looking into how this crash happened and whether speed was a factor.

They will also be checking for possible tire marks to see if the driver hit the brakes at all.

“They’ll obviously be looking for any type of video, any eyewitnesses,” said Philadelphia police Captain Christopher Bradshaw.

Crash investigators said the SUV was not reported stolen.

The identity of the driver has not been released.

No one else was injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
