PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Valentine’s weekend kicked off across Philadelphia on Friday night with couples and friends filling restaurants as they celebrated love – and friendship – ahead of the holiday.
In Fishtown, groups gathered at Evil Genius Beer Company for a Galentine’s Party. “We love the tradition. We try to do it every year,” said Jessica Rivera of Northeast Philadelphia.
Rivera said the night was about more than just fun. “I think friendships are really important. Also, just the community bringing everyone together.”
Gary Howell, assistant general manager at Evil Genius, said the event offered a welcoming space for anyone looking to connect.
“Whether you’re happy or sad, it’s always great to come out, meet with the community, meet new people, meet new friends and that’s what we do here,” he said. Guests also had the chance to make bracelets while enjoying drinks.
“If you’re not celebrating a love story tonight, you might be celebrating a great friendship,” Howell added.
Across town in Society Hill, Positano Coast prepared for a busy weekend with a candlelit dining experience designed to set a romantic tone.
Assistant general manager Zach Black said the restaurant aims to offer an escape.
“You can get away from Philadelphia without having to get away from Philly. Bring a little bit of the Amalfi Coast to you here,” he said. “I love seeing everyone else enjoy it.”
Florists were also gearing up for the rush. At NE Flower Boutique in Old City, employees described the lead-up to Valentine’s Day as their biggest moment of the year.
“It’s been crazy. We call it our Super Bowl. We’re always very excited,” said employee Camila Lyushyk.
Roses remained the top choice for many shoppers.
Gustavo Hernandez-Camacho of South Philadelphia bought bouquets for his mother and aunt. “I just wanted to get them something really nice and make their day special tomorrow,” he said.
Hernandez-Camacho added that the joy surrounding the holiday is contagious. “Just seeing how happy everyone is, it makes me happy as well, and I think that’s what everyone needs – a little bit of happiness.”
