PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Family members, friends and fellow officers filled a room at the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5 on Wednesday to honor Temple University Police Sgt. Christopher “Fitz” Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald was killed in the line of duty three years ago while chasing a suspect tied to a series of carjackings in North Philadelphia.
Fitzgerald’s wife, Marissa, told those gathered that the anniversary remains deeply painful for their family.
“This day will forever haunt me, and it will forever haunt our family. It is the day I had to tell my babies that their father was never coming home,” she said.
But she thanked the community for continuing to honor her husband’s life and offering their support.
Their daughter Autumn also spoke at the vigil, addressing her father directly.
“I just wanted to let you know that I love you and Mommy needs you,” she said. “We all miss you. And I wanted to let you know that you might not be here on Earth, but you’re here in spirit. And I know that you’re always watching over us.”

Fitzgerald, a husband and father of four, was shot and killed by Miles Pfeffer, who was 18 at the time, on February 18, 2023.
Pfeffer was found guilty in June 2025 and sentenced to life without parole.
Andrew Lanetti, president of the Temple University Police Association, said the verdict brought a measure of closure.
“It took very long to get to that point, and I was very happy to see that result of him being in jail for the rest of his life. It’s where he needs to be,” he said.
Temple University Public Safety Vice President and Chief of Police Jennifer Griffin reflected on the loss and the fragility of life.
“I think for all of us it just reminds us that life is very precious and delicate and we really don’t know if we have tomorrow, so spend the time you have here loving the people that are close to you,” she said.
The Temple police community said the vigil will continue to be held each year on the anniversary of Fitzgerald’s death to ensure his family knows he will never be forgotten.
