Philadelphia prepared to spend big for America 250 festivities, report shows

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — New figures released Thursday show Philadelphia is preparing to spend big for America’s 250th birthday celebration this July.

According to a report from the Philadelphia City Controller, the city has budgeted nearly $120 million for the festivities, which includes $70 million for police, fire and emergency management operations, $45 million for special events and $4.6 million for community projects, neighborhood beautification and Mural Arts programs.

In addition, the city is investing another $500 million in upgrades at Philadelphia International Airport ahead of an expected surge in visitors.

City leaders say the celebration, combined with major events including the FIFA World Cup and the MLB All-Star Game, could bring significant employment opportunities and generate an estimated $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion in economic impact.
