Zebulon, NC — Nestled in the heart of downtown Zebulon, Olde Raleigh Distillery has become more than just a small-batch distillery; its a symbol of community revitalization and craftsmanship. Founded by Brandon McCraney, the distillery opened its doors in January 2021 after four years of preparation and has since established itself as a local gem.
“I got into this business because I love it. Besides being a father and a husband, this is my passion,” McCraney shared. “We blend bourbon, and were proud of the product weve created. If you love bourbonor even if youre just curiousweve got great cocktails waiting for you.”
Olde Raleigh Distillery sets itself apart with its approach to blending, inspired by techniques more commonly associated with Scotland. McCraney sources bourbon barrels from across the U.S., blending distinct mash billssome using corn, malted barley, and rye, others incorporating wheat. The result? A rich profile crafted from bourbons aged between 3 and 17 years, sourced from five different states.
“Our blending philosophy is about showcasing variety,” McCraney said. “By combining different recipes and grains, we create a flavor profile thats layered and unique, much like what youd find in a blend like Johnnie Walker Black Label.”
One of the standout features of Olde Raleigh is its striking bottles, which McCraney designed with sustainability and artistry in mind. “I wanted to create a bottle youd think about keeping long-term, like a decanter,” he said. “It reflects our brands attention to detail and commitment to going the extra mile.”
Inside the distillery, the atmosphere matches the craftsmanship of the products. Reclaimed lumber from beams and rafters forms the centerpiece barsone 30 feet long, the other 60 feetwhile the scent of aging bourbon fills the air.
Olde Raleigh Distillery operates as a true small business, with every bottle labeled and packaged by hand. McCraneys wife, an integral part of the operation, ensures that each label is placed with care. “Our employees do it allthey bottle, label, and experiment in different areas of the business,” McCraney said. “Its the essence of small business. Everyone here has a stake in what were building.”
For McCraney, Olde Raleigh Distillery is about more than bourbon. Its about creating a space for the community to gather and supporting Zebulons growth. The distillery includes an event space and regularly welcomes patrons who, as McCraney notes, are invested in its success.
“Our customers care about what were doing here,” he said. “They see the greater good in revitalizing this area. That support means everything to us.”
With its dedication to quality, sustainability, and community, Olde Raleigh Distillery is raising the bar for small businesses in downtown Zebulonone handcrafted bottle at a time.
