The Paralympics began in 1948. Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, head of the Stoke-Mandeville Hospital’s Spinal Injuries Unit, held the Games on hospital grounds. Injured war veterans competed in archery, with 16 participants.

Para ice hockey is currently a mixed sport, with the latest woman to compete being Jing Yu for Team China in 2022. The Women’s Para Ice Hockey World Championship held its first event in 2025 and aims for women’s inclusion in the 2030 Paralympics.
