CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) — Plans are underway to lay to rest Camden firefighter Howard Bennett after he fell into the freezing Delaware River while on duty Thursday.
Bennett’s body was taken from the hospital Friday afternoon and escorted by colleagues in uniform to a funeral home in Maple Shade, where firefighters saluted him in tribute as they prepared to say their final goodbyes.
An investigation is also underway to determine what led to Bennett’s fall into the water.

“I want the family to know that he’s loved by everyone in the fire house,” said Camden Fire Chief Jesse Flax.
Bennett’s colleagues formed an honor escort as his body was transferred from the hospital to the funeral home. At fire headquarters in Camden, where Bennett worked on Engine 1, his locker was adorned with black bunting.
Flax said the department is focused on honoring Bennett and supporting his loved ones.

“We’re focused on just trying to make this an intimate and nice ceremony for the family and for all the loved ones he has,” Flax said. “He has two families. His home family and his fire department family.”
Local and county officials met Friday to begin funeral arrangements for the 61-year-old firefighter, who fell into the icy Delaware River Thursday morning. Officials say the incident occurred during what they described as routine maintenance on a fire boat at Wiggins Waterfront Park.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Friday that it is investigating the incident to determine what happened. No additional details have been released, but the circumstances are not being considered suspicious.
“It’s in the beginning stages right now. They’re investigating,” Flax said. “I think the family and I are looking for understanding just to know what transpired.”
According to the fire chief, Bennett leaves behind a wife and two children. Colleagues described him as a dedicated firefighter who was deeply committed to his work and the community he served.
“He was a valued member of this department,” Flax said. “He loved being a fireman. And loved the community he served.”
Officials have not announced funeral service details, saying plans are still being finalized as the investigation continues.
