TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) — A man using a wheelchair was killed in an overnight hit-and-run near the Trenton Transit Center, and police are searching for the driver and vehicle involved.
Police said the 52-year-old man was crossing Greenwood Avenue near Walnut Avenue around 1:00 a.m. Friday, when he was struck by a vehicle that did not stop. The man suffered multiple fractured ribs and a brain hemorrhage and was taken to Capital Health. Police said he passed away Friday afternoon.
A witness told police the vehicle involved was a Dodge. Investigators said it is likely a dark-colored truck or SUV with front-end damage.
Detective Lt. David Ordille said the driver fled the scene as investigators work to identify the vehicle.
“The vehicle fled the scene and at this point we are trying to identify the vehicle and follow up with them,” Ordille said.
The incident has shaken people living in the nearby neighborhood around the Transit Center.
“It’s horrible. These people kind crazy around here nowadays. So, anything can happen,” Danny Allen of Trenton said.
Another resident, Denise Duehart of Trenton, believes she knows the man, having seen him about the neighborhood.
“If it’s the same person I’m thinking about, it’s a shame,” she said.
Detectives are reviewing multiple surveillance cameras in the area in an effort to develop leads.
“We just try to follow the breadcrumbs and hope we can find something that’s usable to take the next step,” Ordille said.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle to contact Trenton Police.
