LOS ANGELES — A brand new conspiracy is unfolding in the shadows of the Moai.
The first trailer for “Wild Horse Nine” has been released, offering a glimpse into a thriller set against the backdrop of the 1973 Chilean coup.
The film follows CIA operatives Chris (John Malkovich) and Lee (Sam Rockwell), longtime partners dispatched from Santiago to the remote landscape of Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ (Steve Buscemi).
The trailer opens with Chris and Lee on a plane, reflecting on their histories as agents and the missions that have defined their careers. Once on the island, the pair must navigate a web of secrets while surrounded by the stone heads.
“Do you ever get paranoid you’re not being paranoid enough?” Chris asks Lee, setting a tense tone as he warns: “I think we’re being followed.”
Between high-speed seaside car chases and glimpses of covert CIA gear, the trailer makes it clear that someone is always watching.
The mission only grows more volatile when Chris forms a connection with two rebellious students, played by Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas.
In one moment from the trailer, the girls ask the duo point-blank if they are with the CIA. “We are the CIA, we’re totally the CIA,” Chris admits, only for Lee to immediately jump in with: “We’re not the CIA.”
The cast of the film features a mix of talent and new collaborators, including Tom Waits and Parker Posey.
Between montages of fight scenes and a cryptic warning on a yellow card that reads, “Don’t trust Lee!”, the trailer promises a film that blends action and psychological depth.
“Wild Horse Nine” opens in theaters Nov. 6.
