BROOMALL, Pa. (WPVI) – Rosa Lee Stephens marked her 104th birthday surrounded by cheers, applause and generations of family, a celebration that reflected what she says has mattered most throughout her life: faith, community and loved ones.
The room filled with clapping and smiles as Stephens, born more than a century ago, took in the attention. Asked how she felt in the moment, she replied simply, “I don’t know how I feel.”
While the celebration focused on her milestone age, those closest to her said Stephens has never sought the spotlight for herself. When attention turns her way, she redirects it toward her faith. “And he will direct your ways,” Stephens said.
Her daughter, Joyce Stephens Abbott, said that perspective has guided her mother for decades. “Her favorite scripture, ‘in all your ways, acknowledge him and he will direct your path,'” Joyce said.
Stephens’ life has been rooted in church, community and family, a foundation reflected in the gathering of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and extended family. During the celebration, she was reminded of the love around her, hearing the words, “You’re loved, mom. I love you.”
Stephens’ legacy extends beyond her immediate family, reaching a global audience through her youngest daughter’s last name. Joyce Stephens Abbott is the namesake of the ABC television show Abbott Elementary, created by Quinta Brunson and named for Joyce, her former teacher.
Joyce said her decision to become an educator was inspired by her mother, who spent her career as a teacher’s aide while raising eight children.
“She would walk home for lunch, feed us lunch, walk back, and was just very devoted,” Joyce said. “Never was absent, always went to work, always on time, and then coming home, providing a meal, and just raising 8 children and doing it in excellence.”
As the celebration continued, Stephens repeatedly described reaching 104 as “a miracle.” Those around her emphasized that the number itself mattered less to her than who was there to share the day.
What mattered most, family members said, was having her loved ones come together.
The celebration echoed with repeated rounds of “Happy birthday,” underscoring a life centered on family bonds. For Stephens, whose family name is now recognized far beyond her home, that connection remains unchanged.
