PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A major beautification effort is underway along Market Street East, where city officials and local organizations are preparing for an influx of visitors expected this summer.
The project is funded by a $1.85 million grant awarded to the Center City District.
The initiative aims to transform vacant buildings, empty windows, and aging infrastructure into a more vibrant corridor. Asphalt will give way to plants, artwork, and pop-up storefronts.
“It will make the city really pretty,” said Raven Valley, who lives near Market East.
Erick Howell of South Philadelphia added, “I would love it. I would love it if it was decorated.”
The improvements come as Philadelphia readies for major events, including America’s 250th birthday and the World Cup.
“The theme is just vibrant, beautiful joy. We want to make sure people feel happy and excited,” said Lauren Smith of Center City District.
Work will stretch along Market Street from 7th to 13th streets. Crews will replace dying trees and plants, paint light poles, and spruce up bus shelters.
Mural Arts Philadelphia is also contributing to the project, bringing installations from local artists to the corridor.
The first installation will appear at 10th and Market, at an entrance to The Fashion District.
“All the artists we’re working with live in Philadelphia, and we really want to showcase what Philly has here and the folks and the businesses and the artist who are here,” Smith said.
Plans also include beautifying the exterior of a building in the 1000 block of Market Street that the 76ers own and have plans to demolish, though that demolition is currently on hold as the team partners with the Center City District for the beautification project.
In the 900 block, the Center City District will host pop-up storefronts featuring local businesses.
“That sounds like a fun idea. I’ll be open to,” said Lizzy Wysession of Washington Square West.
Smith added, “We’re really excited to be able to go in and insert into those spaces.”
With a goal of completing the work by May, crews have already begun making changes as the city aims to look its best for the busy months ahead.
As Howell put it, “We’re popping in Philly 2026 definitely!”
The Center City District plans to announce which businesses will participate in the pop-ups in the coming weeks.
