WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) — The lineup was just revealed for the upcoming Broadway season at the Playhouse on Rodney Square in Wilmington and it’s going to be blockbuster.
It’s a season full of premieres at the historic playhouse, which is the oldest continuously operating theater in the country.
“This is a really big season for Broadway and Wilmington, for our 26/27 season,” says Jake Glassman from The Playhouse on Rodney Square. “We’re going to start off with ‘The Wiz.'”
The 1975 hit musical, turned film, is now back on stage.
“This is the 50th anniversary production that was recently seen on Broadway,” says Glassman. “It’s a Tony Award-winner for best musical, and we’re really excited about that one.”
Then, the six wives of Henry VII are bringing their high energy, smash hit Broadway show to Wilmington.
“We’re super thrilled to have ‘SIX,’ which is currently on Broadway and is just a global sensation,” says Glassman.
Also in the lineup, “Beetlejuice,” fresh off Broadway.
“It’s based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film, telling the story of Lydia Deetz and the demon with a thing for stripes,” says Glassman. “It’s a big hit, really famous.”
Also coming to the Playhouse is “The Bodyguard.”
“It’s based on the Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner movie,” says Glassman. “It’s the internationally acclaimed stage musical that hasn’t been seen North America on tour for a little while. It’s coming back, and it’s got all those amazing Whitney Houston songs.”
“A Beautiful Noise” is the jukebox musical about singer-songwriter Neil Diamond.
“It has all those hits like ‘Sweet Caroline’ and ‘America’ and was written in conjunction with Neil Diamond himself,” says Glassman.
“It’s also one of those shows that’s direct from Broadway.”
And finally: “Clue.”
“It’s based off the movie and the Hasbro board game,” he says. “It has mayhem, murder, mansions, all that good stuff.”
