MANTUA TWP., N.J. (WPVI) — Police are investigating allegations that a hidden camera was placed inside a bathroom at a Mantua Township barbershop, where it allegedly captured images of customers without their knowledge.
Authorities say a powerbank device was discovered inside a restroom at Gino’s Barbershop on Bridgeton Pike. Police say the camera had been positioned to record unsuspecting customers.
Richard Doerrmann, 56, who reportedly worked at the business, was arrested Friday and faces multiple charges, police said.
Police said the barbershop’s owner found the hidden camera and immediately contacted authorities, prompting an investigation.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by Action News, Doerrmann was interviewed by police on February 16, where he allegegly admitted to placing the device inside a basket on the back of the toilet on or about February 5.
“He acknowledged that the basket belonged to him and that he positioned the device underneath toilet paper inside the basket,” the complaint alleges.
Police say Doerrmann provided inconsistent statements regarding his use of the device.
He allegedly told police that he previously tested the camera feature but claimed he did not know if it was recording while inside the bathroom.
Doerrmann also stated that placing the device inside the bathroom wasn’t intentional, but reportedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right when pressed for further explanation, the criminal complaint states.
A search warrant later confirmed that Doerrmann was in possession of naked videos that captured the bathroom located at Gino’s Barbershop.
Jonathan Ladner, who runs a pizza shop across the street from Gino’s Barbershop, said he was shocked by the allegations.
“I never got my haircut by him, but I’ve been getting my haircut there on and off for about 20 years,” Ladner said.
Ladner said the idea that a camera could be hidden in the bathroom is alarming.
“Is quite frightening to think that there could be a camera hidden somewhere because it’s not really a big bathroom,” he said.
Action News went to Doerrmann’s home in Mickleton, but no one answered the door.
Authorities said he was booked into the Salem County Jail on Wednesday on multiple charges.
Ladner said he has used the bathroom at the barbershop before and is concerned. He estimated Doerrmann had been cutting hair there for at least 15 years and described him as well-known in the community.
“You put your faith and trust in a small business, and there’s a bad apple in the bunch is a terrible thing to hear,” Ladner said.
On Tuesday, signs were posted on the shop’s door, though the barbershop remained open.
An employee and a customer who spoke off camera said they were surprised by the allegations and concerned that images could have been taken of them.
Investigators are now working to determine how many potential victims there may be.
Doerrmann is charged with one count of third-degree invasion of privacy and two counts of fourth-degree invasion of privacy.
