“Sometimes you don’t want to eat with other people,” Whoopi continued in her recent interview. “Sometimes you just want to go and have some pasta. You don’t want to say, ‘Do you want red wine or white wine?’ I don’t give a f–k what you want.”
But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t shared her heart with a significant other before. She first tied the knot with Alvin Martin—with whom she shares her only daughter Alex Martin, 51—in 1973, but the couple called it quits six years later. Whoopi then briefly married film director David Claessen in the late ‘80s, before moving on to Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994. However, the latter relationship ended that following year.
Though those romances didn’t work out, it ultimately taught her to recognize how much she enjoys her own company.
“I’m not good at relationships because you have to think about other people,” she explained, “and I have enough to think about with my daughter, her husband, my grandkids, my great-grandkids and all the people at work.”
